MODERNIZATION AND WOMEN

IN PAKISTAN

Hello Folks!
I have often heard people commenting on how negatively or positively has Modernization influenced women in Pakistan.
Today, i aim to provide an insight about Modernization and women in Pakistan. Here we go.
The transition from the traditional society of the past to modern society as is found today in the West is known as Modernization.
Modernization has negatively affected the status of women in Developing countries is just a state of mind for those who want to self pity.
When changes started occurring over the world, they automatically influenced the developing countries but in a positive way.
The first instance of Modernization process in the west world was marked with the Development of Industrial Technology.
It transformed home based family units economic activity into an efficient generating process. The demand for labor led women in relatively large numbers to join the formal labor force.
In Pakistan, there are about 24.10 percent women who participate in the labor sector. The statistics representing women vary in various sectors.
Secondly, changes in the structure of Employment sector too ,led to the entry of women, mothers with small children into the labor force.
However, greater efforts need to be made on terms of wages and good opportunities to be at par with men.
Thirdly, Modernization led to the increase in Educational and job opportunities. This led to the increase in day care and child care facilities. All this resulted in opening new venues for women.
Fourthly, Modernization has positively contributed in reducing the norms of patriarchy by laying a positive focus on women and their issues.
There are families which are headed by Matriarchy too.Clapping requires two hands only.
Fifthly, the role of women began to change from the submissive, dependent and the childbearing traditional woman to the modern woman.
This led to the demanding for equal rights, sovereignty, and independence assuming the equally heavy career responsibilities.
Sixth, the impact of Modernization affected the role of women. Whatever, programs out there;still they have not taken into account women’s specific needs and multiple role responsibilities.
As a result, women’s productivity has generally remained at a low level.
Seventh, Modernization has also influenced the pattern of marriage decision in family and now females too have a choice in marriage decision.
Eighth, the increase in Education and increase in Literacy, legal reforms, health care facilities, fertility control are some of the components that played a huge role in the process of Modernization.
And Lastly, due to Modernization, females are going beyond their traditional gender roles.
In the end,I would like to say that though Modernization has a positive influence/impact on women and their status in Pakistan;still there are a lot of extremist groups who have their own ends to meet.
Off and on they come to the forefront and can destroy the very nature of Modernization.
It is this time, we need to stand united and follow our core values and represent our specific needs rather than going into debates on vulgar slogans and petty fights.
And so does the Media needs to play its positive role in this whole scenario.Lets have enlightened Moderation without going to extremes and hurting opposite Genders.
It is not wrong to say; United we stand,Divided we fall. Every day is a women day.We need not categorize it specially to make a difference.Implementation starts from our core unit.Think about it.
Have a blessed weekend.

A BIRTHDAY WISH

(Based on a True Story)

It was a night not describable in terms of vocabulary but explained in terms of inner feelings. The pain and turmoil with every passing second (music of grief),enhancing of the slightest sound with the mumbling of the voices.

The night of 30th April,2013 was no less than a pain and torture for the whole family. Waiting in the patients waiting area for hours not being allowed to visit her mother in the ICU, still hoping for her survival and recovery gave her a pain in the heart and brain every time she thought of her mother.

Sitting on the iron chair, praying for her mother ,SHE could feel her hands and brain becoming restless. She got up and went outside the ICU ,where her mother was. She wanted to meet her desperately. Being turned back again and again she went to the sitting area and again prayed for her mother.

Time was ticking(ticking of clock) ,not on the wall only but inside her(pounding of heart),her ears, alert on the announcements of the doctors, nurses and any news that could be heard. It was passed 3:00 am in the morning ;keeping awake all night she could feel something inside her ,unable to answer the questions inside her, she again went to the ICU, turned away again with despair and hate.

She came and started walking to and fro, overall restless not knowing what to do, couldn’t call the family and add worry to their tormented souls; kept on waiting. Time kept on ticking so did the tick tock inside her.

Then she could hear the Fajr prayers and see the dim light of the day. At that time voices started becoming clearer. She then heard the voice behind the counter calling attendant of bed number 27.

With a pain in the heart , praying to hear something positive, she muster up her courage and went to the ICU .There stood a Doctor who on her entry asked her if she knew what had happened to the mother.

Confused in her mind as to why the doctor is asking such a question from her, she explained everything to him. Then he asked where the family was. She told him that they were at home .Then he told her to contact them and ask them to come.

The doctor told her that they were trying to revive the mother who was on ventilation for a week .He told her that she could go outside and call the family. She knew the signals inside were very weak and going outside might take away any chances of not seeing her mother again….

If the mother is revived, she might ask about her, she did not want to take the chance of leaving her, she stayed there and waited, her senses totally numb; after some seconds the same Doctor came and said……we are sorry, she is no more.

My heaven had broken down, the sky seemed falling on me and I feeling as I would too, go under the soil. The medical staff opened the curtains for me. With tears trickling down my eyes, trying to stay composed, there lied my whole universe shattered in front of me. I went near the bed where she was lying ,seeing all kind of pipes coming out of her, I looked at her and then hugged her and kept on saying; Ami please open your eyes, Ami get up.

The voice failed to come out of me but somehow I could hear it. The tears couldn’t stop rolling down my eyes and my mind and heart failed to tally with my words. I desperately wanted her to get up and hug me and kiss me and talked to me but that never happened. My whole life had come to an end.

The whole staff and medical facility seemed like horror film characters. I hated the very sight of them; their words of console and sympathy appeared as wounds of a sword. Nothing could comfort me. I could not leave her sight. They would not let me stay. Broken and torn inside out, I got up and made a call to the family to give them the news. I remembered her wish when she was alive;

“YA MERAY ALLAH, CHAALTAY PHIRTAY UTHA LEINA,MUHTAAJI NA DENA”

(Oh my Lord, take my soul while i can walk; do not give me a life of dependency)

Her wish was granted. It was her birthday….

TRUSTING YOURS GUTS

Hello Folks!

Some times not trusting your guts can be a major obstacle in your way of success. There is an ever going debate on mind versus body.Hence, today, I would like to share a few tips on how to trust your guts without undermining the power of mind. So, lets look at a few tips.

Firstly, I would recommend all of you to trust your gut rather than trusting your mind. Most of our decisions are led by our guts rather than our minds and they turn out to be wonderful decisions. There is no harm in trusting your gut while making a decision which has no negative or wrong impact on anyone.

Secondly, If you are to take a decision which has a long term consequence, i would recommend you to sleep over it and think about it and analyze it and if your gut tells you to do it, then take the decision.Don’t prolong it.

Thirdly, try to interpret good and bad instincts. Practice makes a man perfect. There may be times when you have a certain feeling about something.Let your body decide the reaction to it and if it says yes, just follow it without thinking too much on it.

Fourthly, try to surround yourself with people who elevate you rather than those who bring you down. These are the real people you can trust with your future endeavors and rely on them in difficult times.

Fifthly, trust you gut especially in times when you feel unsafe. There are no hard and fast rules to as or where or when or with who you will start feeling unsafe but if you come across such feelings, trust your guts and flee away from such a situation.

Sixth, challenge yourself everyday.Put yourself in a new situation daily and walk through it.See what your gut tells you about the situation and what you do to overcome it.

Seventh, before going to bed at night, think about all the decisions you made by trusting your gut and how did they end. If your decisions made you proud, don’t forget to applause yourself.

And Lastly, listen to the signs your body is giving you. Don’t under estimate them and put them in doldrums.Think about them, analyze them and act appropriately. That is how you will learn to trust your guts.

In the end, I would like to say that both our mind and body work together to make us move forward, have enlightenment about good or bad. However, without putting our trust in our guts gives away every chance of thinking out of the box and reaching heights yet to be discovered.

Have a great weekend.
