INSPIRATIONS/HOW TRAVELLING CAN OPEN YOUR EYES?

Hello Folks!

We don’t need personalities or great achievers to get inspiration. One can also derive inspiration from https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/inspiration  common people having unbelievable qualities to make a change.

Here, is my story, how traveling can open one’s eyes to the atrocities/discrimination around us. Today, I will talk about such a person who has been my inspiration since childhood. So let’s talk about her.

I remember, Haiqa from my childhood memories of the 1980s. I was 5 years old then, traveling with my family to the U.S. My father was a government official who was deputed in the U.S to attend a study course at the University of Vanderbilt.

I had dreams as every child would have while traveling abroad, unaware of atrocities, awaiting us.

Asians and people from other Nationalities are valued with great esteem in our part of the world but to the outside world, we are bloody Paki’s or Brown Nation and may also be categorized at best as Indians as a compliment.

My first memory of Racism is an encounter at the  U.S Airport. This, I witnessed and observed through the body language of my father who then was in his early 40’s as I am today.

rascism

My father very politely addressed the white man (him )as “Sir’’, and asked him how to operate the vending machine?

He jerked his shoulders and with disgust on his face went away. I was too young to determine whether he was an American or belonged to some other nationality. My small brain only knew that he was white/fair and we were brown.

I kept on observing my father and the reactions of the passers-by who mostly were white/fair people. I could not find one white person who would stop and show a kind gesture of telling my father how to operate a vending machine.

My father looked at me and smiled and said, “it’s ok darling, we are new here and people don’t understand our accent.”

different color

I smiled back at him and nodded ok. But in my heart, I knew, there was something wrong.

I turned around and looked at different people who were gazing at us. Feeling slighted and embarrassed, I hid behind my father.

In the meantime, I had already observed a Black man standing around the corner of the vending machine observing the attitudes of the passers-by.

After some time, he mustered up the courage and came to my father and told him how to operate the vending machine. My father thanked him a lot for the help.

I was very much impressed by the attitude of the Black person and how my father described his kindness.

The only topic of our discussion on the way to the University placed apartments was the kindness of the Black person and how we should be kind to each other irrespective of our color or race or language.

The reception committee in the apartment building was very cordial as far as I can remember. They gave us a warm welcome and showed my father the apartment where he was to stay for two years during his study.

There was a park in front of the building in which we lived. My mother used to watch us from the kitchen window while we sisters played in the playground.

bullying of black girl

It was the playground where I met Haiqa for the first time.

She was being bullied by American boys and as I recalled my experience at the Airport, how it made me feel; without thinking, I rushed to her rescue. When the boys saw me coming, running towards them, they were scared and ran off.

She looked at me, smiled, thanked me and we became best friends till my stay in the U.S. She was from Ghana.

She was my crime partner in eating the snacks her mother and my mom brought but we were happy. I don’t remember her parents that much but they never said anything regarding our friendship.

I remember one particular incident of Elevators that changed my life forever. They have always scared the hell out of me. And the elevator in our building was the sort that did not open if it was closed.

Once coming back from the playground, she and I were in the Elevator. The elevator opened on our floor and she went out. She knew elevators scared me. As soon as she got out, she called my nickname and said, Sherry, “come quickly before the elevator closes”.

I was about to get out when the elevator started closing.

She could see the fear in my eyes. Without hesitation, for a moment she placed her hand in front of the closing door of the elevator and said to me not to worry and get out.

I managed to get out but unfortunately, her hand was stuck in the elevator. I tried opening the elevator to take her hand out but it was of no avail.

I told her not to worry as I will get help. I ran to my mother and told her that Haiqa’s hand was stuck in the elevator. My mother then called her parents to let them know of the situation along with the maintenance people.

We all were there when the maintenance guys took her hand out of the stuck elevator.

I thank God every day that nothing happened to her. She changed my views about life forever.

friends

I think about her every day and recall her attitude towards people of color.

How a small gesture can change someone’s life forever. Good deeds are never forgotten and come back time and again to smooth someone’s else life.

I wish her happiness and success wherever she is and have this desire that someday, our paths meet again.

And, I can show her, how I have graced over the years from a frustrated child to a graceful lady and how her attitude towards friends and unknown people has made me contribute my life’s learning in helping people around me and the globe.

Until next time stay safe and healthy.

GRIEVANCES OF THE SMALLER FISH

GRIEVANCES OF THE SMALLER FISH

Hello Folks!

In the wake of COVID19, we have witnessed a great shift on many fronts. Today, I aim to talk about one such front which is the grievances of the smaller fish. So let’s start.

Keeping in view the health perspective and all, the Educational institutions closed down and that halted the overall studies of children/ students altogether.

After some time the studies were resumed via online teaching. A whole new concept for those who never taught online and only knew how to teach face to face.

Most of the parents criticized this form of teaching in the first place as they too were not well equipped with this setup. As time passed everyone more or less became attuned to the idea of online learning and teaching.

However, one should not forget that the smaller fish were the ones who should and are the ones to be given the credit for updating their methodologies and integrating a fast mode in their educational institutions.

For the bigger fish, the online system was no problem as they have not for a day faced any break down; be it in terms of finances or infrastructure or billing. Everything is covered either in one or the other category. For them, it is a no gain, no loss scenario.

The real affectees are the smaller fish who not only are humble in their overall performance but go a step forward to put a smile on everyone’s face particularly the parents.

The previous few months have been really hard both for the parents and the smaller fish. They had the decency to understand the grievances of the parents by accomodating them in terms of fees even though they too have a system to run.

Keeping the attitude of the smaller fish in view, the parents should have been more than grateful for what was being given to them but instead, some have become defaulters and some even left the school without prior notice.

With the backdrop of the smaller fish, the bigger fish have been enjoying all perks and benefits. They block the student from entering the system if the fee is non paid or even late. Here, we cannot see parents taking their children out of school or children suffering due to non-education. Why?

The reason is that the bigger fish are doing business and everyone in their business is a client; be it a learner or the parent. They have no mercy for the ones who are suffering. They have a bigger fish to fry.

So, why should the smaller fish suffer for their humane treatment with the parents who are thankless for the efforts being made by the smaller fish.

In the end, I would like to say that the smaller fish to have to pay for the salaries of the staff and the ones concerned with running an institution. They, too have homes to run and families to keep together. They do not have miscellaneous pockets to make up for the losses like the bigger fish.

It is a sorry state of affairs when we take the smaller fish for granted and try applying all rules and regulations on them while the bigger fish are Scott free.

In my humble opinion, these are the mediums who make leaders of the future and need to be acknowledged at large for the commitment they provide.

As an individual, it is our duty and responsibility to stand by their side in easing the grievances of the small fish and help them deliver their commitment to equity.

Think about it. Until next time stay safe and healthy.

PROFESSIONAL JEALOUSIES

PROFESSIONAL JEALOUSIES

Hello Folks!

Today, I aim to talk about Professional Jealousies. It is heart burning when you see the most capable of professionals engulfed with this disease. Today, I will address this ailment and how to keep away from it. So let’s start.

Being human and socially extroverts, most of us have the curiosity of learning new things. And it is the love for learning that brings us across all types of individuals in particular the professionally jealous kind.

They may greet you in the first place and tell you all sorts of fancy things regarding their profession. Once you start questioning then, would you only be encountered with such talk that will automatically help you in taking a firm decision.

A few days back, I too, was encountered with such an incident. And it left a very bad taste in my mouth. So instead of letting it absorbed deep down in me and pollute me with negative thoughts, I decided to share it with all my readers.

And in particular, those people who want to keep on learning. Never be discouraged, no matter how many times you are slighted by people. Keep on pursuing what you want to pursue in life. Don’t worry about the odds.

Don’t let the so-called professional people be judgemental, just because you are asking questions. Questions my friend is a good thing. It only shows you think, observe, and have the curiosity to know more about it.

The private sectors are always hunting for talented, innovative, and honest people.

And frankly, a lot of people are suffering due to the attitude of so-called professionals who in order, to address their insecurities can easily turn a humble person into a rage monster.

Never let the self die in you, just because you have become a victim of professional jealousy. Pursue your passion and move on with dignity.

Every one of us is here on this planet to understand our purpose and to do good to others. When you have the idea of doing good, then there is no space left for professional jealousy.

Each of us will ultimately find our right way stumbling and experimenting but if you come across the professionally jealous lot, change your path. You will eventually find the right people on your road to success.

In the end, I would like to say that status of rich and poor is given by God but respect is earned. Do not let anyone take that away from you. Be excellent in your field; one of a kind but do not let the power get to your brain.

The more humble you are, the more respect you have. Treat everyone at par without developing prejudices and categorizing people as “lip pickers”. Your destiny is decided by the creator and no one can change that.

But, my friend, you can change the way people take you. Think about it.

Until next time, stay Safe and Healthy.
